King Charles III is set to take a rare step on American soil later this month: addressing a joint session of Congress during his first U.S. visit as monarch.

House Speaker Mike Johnson extended the invitation this week, calling the U.S.-U.K. alliance “one of the most consequential partnerships in history.”

The address will come as part of a four-day visit to Washington from April 27–30, where the King and Queen Camilla are also scheduled to attend a White House state dinner.

Congressional leaders framed the moment as both symbolic and strategic — a chance for Charles to outline his vision for the future while reinforcing ties between the two nations at a “pivotal time.”

But the optics may not be entirely smooth.

The visit lands against the backdrop of rising friction between President Trump and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, particularly over the ongoing conflict involving Iran. That tension could complicate what is otherwise being billed as a celebration of shared history ahead of America’s 250th anniversary.
