Trump Makes History As New $1 Coin Officially Enters Circulation

President Donald Trump’s image is officially appearing on American money after the U.S. Mint released a new $1 coin bearing his likeness into circulation Wednesday.

The U.S. Mint confirmed that the historic coins are now available to the public as part of the nation’s 250th anniversary celebration.

Collectors can purchase a roll of 25 coins for $61 or a bag containing 100 coins for $154.50 through the Mint’s website. During the first 24 hours of sales, customers are limited to two of each product per household.

ABC News first reported Wednesday morning that the coins had officially entered circulation.

Trump’s Portrait Meets The Presidential Seal

The front of the golden-colored coin features a portrait of Trump alongside the inscriptions “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST” and “1776~2026.”

U.S. Mint Chief Engraver Joseph Menna designed the portrait using an official White House photograph taken by photographer Daniel Torok.

The reverse features the Presidential Seal, including an eagle clutching an olive branch and a bundle of arrows. The number “250” appears on the eagle’s shield in recognition of America’s semiquincentennial.

Despite its golden appearance, the coin does not contain gold. It is composed primarily of copper, with smaller amounts of zinc, manganese and nickel.

A Rare Piece Of Presidential History

The release makes Trump the first sitting American president to appear alone on a U.S. coin produced for everyday circulation, according to Euronews.

President Calvin Coolidge appeared alongside George Washington on a commemorative half dollar in 1926, but that coin was not intended for ordinary circulation.

When the final Trump coin was unveiled in July, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said it would “honor the enduring legacy of liberty” and serve as a “lasting symbol of patriotism.”

“It celebrates the strength of American values, and the promise of a nation dedicated to preserving freedom for all,” Bessent wrote.

Trump said at the time that the honor came as a surprise.

“I was very honored. It’s cute. Not a bad picture,” Trump said. “It was very unusual, but I was honored by it.”

A Fourth Of July Surprise

Some buyers could receive an especially rare version.

The Mint struck 250,000 Trump coins at its Philadelphia facility on July 4 with a special “July 4th” privy mark. Those coins have been randomly mixed into the rolls and bags now being sold online.

The coins bear no traditional mint mark and have a circulating finish.

Congress authorized the special one-year $1 coin program through the Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act of 2020, legislation Trump signed during his first term. The law allows the Treasury secretary to mint and issue new dollar coins celebrating America’s 250th anniversary throughout 2026.
