First Lady Melania Trump is preparing to welcome representatives from Russia and Ukraine to the White House this week, marking an extraordinary diplomatic moment as the two nations remain locked in a devastating war.

The White House announced Tuesday that the first lady will personally convene representatives from both countries on Thursday, November 5, following a humanitarian ceasefire she helped negotiate in the war-torn Ukrainian city of Oleshky.

The administration described the development as an unprecedented diplomatic initiative by an American first lady.

“First Lady Melania Trump will personally bring representatives of Russia and Ukraine, two nations actively at war, together at the White House,” the Office of the First Lady announced. “This event represents an extraordinary moment in American history.”

Melania Trump is scheduled to deliver remarks at 11 a.m. Eastern on Thursday, outlining the results of the temporary ceasefire and her involvement in securing humanitarian assistance for civilians trapped in the conflict.

The meeting follows a remarkable humanitarian breakthrough.

Last month, the first lady worked with Russian and Ukrainian officials to establish a temporary pause in fighting around Oleshky, a city in Ukraine’s southern Kherson region that has endured years of devastating warfare.

The ceasefire began October 27, two days earlier than initially planned, allowing humanitarian convoys to deliver desperately needed supplies and helping civilians escape the besieged area.

According to subsequent reporting and statements from the first lady, the operation helped evacuate nearly 800 people.

“The situation in Oleshky is dire. Oleshky is a front-line war city on the brink of disaster,” Melania Trump said when announcing the agreement in October.

She explained that many of the remaining residents were elderly civilians facing shortages of medicine, food, clean water and electricity.

The White House said the first lady and her representative worked directly with leadership from both countries to establish the agreement’s terms, including evacuation procedures, humanitarian access and security arrangements.

The initiative also built upon communication channels Melania Trump previously established while working to reunite children separated from their families during the war. Her office said those earlier efforts helped reunite 34 children through six separate operations.

The upcoming White House gathering could represent another significant development in those humanitarian efforts.

However, the administration has not identified which Russian or Ukrainian representatives will attend or indicated whether formal peace negotiations will take place.

The meeting also comes as President Donald Trump’s administration continues pursuing broader diplomatic efforts to end the war, with additional U.S.-mediated talks involving Moscow and Kyiv expected in Abu Dhabi next week.

Although the Oleshky ceasefire was limited to a specific region and did not halt fighting elsewhere in Ukraine, the humanitarian operation demonstrated that cooperation between the two countries remains possible despite their ongoing hostilities.

Melania Trump has expressed hope that the agreement could eventually contribute to a wider diplomatic breakthrough.
