While Kamala Harris continues to avoid the press, Donald Trump announced at Mar-a-Lago that he has agreed to participate in multiple debates against the Democratic presidential nominee. The move is seemingly aimed at changing the narrative in a race that has become a dead heat since Joe Biden dropped out.
“We have to set the record straight,” Trump told reporters.
The former president has agreed to participate in three presidential debates with Harris, including a Fox News debate on Sept. 4, NBC on Sept. 10 and ABC on Sept. 25. However, the arrangement is not yet finalized.
“The other side has to agree to the terms,” Trump added. “They may or may not agree.”
On Wednesday morning, Trump announced on “Fox & Friends” that he plans to debate Harris in the near future.
Commenting on Harris’ political abilities, Trump remarked, “I hear she’s a bit of a nasty person, but not a good debater.” He added, “But we’ll see because we’ll be debating her, I guess, in the pretty near future.”
Trump’s offer follows a standoff between his and Harris’ campaigns over the choice of debate hosts.
A lone ABC News debate, which was originally scheduled for Sept. 10, was supposed to feature both Trump and President Biden. However, Biden’s withdrawal from the race immediately cast doubt on its status. Eventually, Trump appeared to also pulled out, citing his lawsuit against ABC News host George Stephanopoulos.
Harris’ campaign likewise rejected Trump’s proposal to appear on Fox News on Sept. 4. A spokesperson accused Trump of “running scared” and hoping for more favorable coverage from Fox.
