President Trump called to complete the Keystone XL pipeline which was cancelled by the Biden Administration in 2021.
In a Monday evening post on his Truth Social platform, Trump wrote that “I was just thinking, that the company building the Keystone XL Pipeline that was viciously jettisoned by the incompetent Biden Administration should come back to America, and get it built — NOW!”
Keystone XL was set to carry tar sands oil from Alberta to the Gulf Coast, and drew particular concern from environmentalists due to the higher greenhouse gas emissions of tar sands oil and the risk of a rupture or spill. The oil and gas industry, meanwhile, called the project a job creator, and the International Brotherhood of Teamsters union, which endorsed Biden in 2020, also vocally opposed the cancellation.
Biden revoked a key permit for the project shortly after taking office in 2021 as part of a raft of environmental actions in his first days as president that also included a temporary halt on all new oil and gas leases on federal lands.
The Keystone XL pipeline’s then-operator, TC Energy, announced the pipeline had been terminated in June of that year. TC has since spun off its liquid pipeline operations as South Bow.
Trump seemingly acknowledged the project’s uncertain status even if its permits were restored, writing: “Easy approvals, almost immediate start! If not them, perhaps another Pipeline Company.”
“We want the Keystone XL Pipeline built!” he added.
