President Donald Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance were not invited to the funeral of former Vice President Dick Cheney, Fox News has confirmed.

The funeral is scheduled for Thursday morning at the Washington National Cathedral. Sitting presidents traditionally attend services for former presidents and vice presidents, but Trump’s strained relationship with the Cheney family in recent years appears to have influenced the decision. Axios first reported the exclusion.

Cheney’s daughter, former Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., played a leading role in the House committee investigating Trump’s actions surrounding the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. Both she and her father endorsed former Vice President Kamala Harris during the 2024 presidential campaign, publicly breaking with Trump and the modern GOP.

Dick Cheney — who rose from Casper, Wyoming, to a decades-long career as a congressman, White House chief of staff, Defense secretary, and one of the most influential vice presidents in American history — died earlier this month at age 84.

“Richard B. Cheney, the 46th Vice President of the United States, died last night, November 3, 2025. He was 84 years old,” the Cheney family said in a statement obtained by Fox News. “His beloved wife of 61 years, Lynne, his daughters, Liz and Mary, and other family members were with him as he passed. The former Vice President died due to complications of pneumonia and cardiac and vascular disease.”

The family praised Cheney’s decades of public service and his dedication to his family, calling him “a great and good man” who taught his children and grandchildren “to love our country, and to live lives of courage, honor, love, kindness, and fly fishing.”

Cheney had a long history of cardiac issues, including five heart attacks. He received a heart transplant on March 24, 2012, after nearly two years on a transplant waiting list.

Serving two terms as vice president under President George W. Bush, Cheney became one of the most powerful and controversial figures ever to hold the office. He played a central role in shaping the “war on terror,” including the U.S. invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq.
