On Tuesday morning, President Trump met with House Republicans at the Kennedy Center as part of the GOP retreat.

His remarks come days after the U.S. captured Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, who have been indicted on narco-terrorism charges. Maduro pleaded not guilty on Monday during his first court appearance in New York.

Trump paid tribute to the late California Republican Rep. Doug LaMalfa while speaking to House Republicans at the Kennedy Center, saying he was “saddened” to hear of the congressman’s death.

“I was thinking about not doing the speech in his honor but I’m going to do it in his honor. He would have said do the speech,” Trump said.

“He was a defender of everyone and our hearts go out to him and his wife Jill. You know, he voted with me 100% of the time,” he continued, going on to detail his working relationship with LaMalfa.

Trump also said his thoughts and prayers were with Indiana Republican Rep. Jim Baird (Ind.) and his wife, who were both injured in a car accident.

“He’s going to be fine, she’s going to be fine, but it was a bad accident,” the president said.
