President-elect Trump suggested to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau last week that if a tariff for failing to address trade and immigration issues would “kill” our northern neighbor’s economy, maybe it should become the 51st state, sources told Fox News.
Trump met with Trudeau in Florida over the holiday weekend after threatening a 25% blanket tariff on all products imported from north of the border, unless action was taken to curb the flow of illegal drugs and illegal immigrants into the United States. Canadian Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc told CBC News on Sunday that measures have been taken to secure the U.S.-Canadian border, but it is important to step up border security in a “visible and muscular way.”
Now, new details are beginning to emerge about the meeting between the two men, which Trump called “very productive.”
The Canadian official also said that he and Trudeau raised concerns about guns being smuggled from the U.S. into Canada during the weekend meeting at Mar-a-Lago and that they “talked about the challenge that fentanyl represents in Canada,” which he noted are “shared objectives.”
