President Trump on Thursday tapped Secretary of State Marco Rubio to lead the United States’ push to bring the 2035 World Expo to America — a role that adds to Rubio’s expanding responsibilities in the Trump administration.

Rubio, a Miami native and former Florida senator, will chair the U.S. bid effort as the administration moves to position the country for another high-profile international event. In addition to serving as secretary of state, Rubio is also acting administrator of the U.S. Agency for International Development and acting archivist at the National Archives and Records Administration.

Trump announced the decision in a post on Truth Social, saying the administration intends to pursue hosting the global exhibition in South Florida.

“Today, I am announcing the United States’ intention to bid for the World Expo 2035. The Great State of Florida has expressed strong interest in hosting the Expo in Miami, which I fully support. Miami Expo 2035 can be the next big milestone in our new Golden Age of America,” Trump wrote.

“I am appointing Miami native Secretary of State Marco Rubio to Chair the efforts of coordinating and advancing this exciting opportunity to convene the World. We will create thousands of jobs, and add Billions of Dollars in GROWTH, to our Economy,” the president added.

Supporters of the bid say hosting a World Expo would bring major benefits for American workers and businesses, including expanded tourism, new infrastructure investment, and opportunities to showcase U.S. innovation and industry on a global stage — particularly in a fast-growing region like Miami.

The World Expo — officially known as an International Registered Exhibition — is a large-scale global event held every five years that brings together countries, companies, and organizations to showcase new technologies and ideas. Organizers describe it as a platform to present solutions to the world’s “pressing challenges,” and modern expos often highlight advances in energy, transportation, sustainability, and economic development.

World Expos typically draw tens of millions of visitors, creating a major boost for local economies, hospitality, and small businesses. A successful bid for Miami could further strengthen Florida’s reputation as a hub for growth, tourism, and international commerce — trends Republicans often point to as evidence of strong conservative governance and pro-business policies.

Trump also pointed to past efforts to bring major global events to the U.S. and said his administration is continuing that momentum.

“In my First Term as President, I fought hard to bring the 2026 FIFA World Cup and 2028 LA Summer Olympics to the U.S.A. I now have the Honor of hosting as the 47th President, plus America250, G20 Doral, and the G7,” Trump wrote.

“I look forward to winning and participating in the Miami Expo 2035!” he continued.

If the United States secures the World Expo in 2035, it would mark another major international win for the country.
