President Donald Trump is set to campaign Friday alongside Rep. Mike Lawler (R-N.Y.) in one of the nation’s most closely watched House battlegrounds, offering a major show of support for one of the Republican Party’s most vulnerable incumbents.
According to a White House event sign-up page shared by Lawler’s campaign, Trump will travel to Rockland County, New York, for an event centered on tax relief and economic issues.
The visit comes as Republicans prepare for a difficult election environment and seek to hold onto a razor-thin House majority, with economic concerns and affordability expected to remain dominant issues for voters heading into November.
White House spokeswoman Liz Huston said the event will spotlight Trump’s economic record and contrast Republican tax policies with Democratic opposition.
“This Friday, President Trump will visit the great State of New York to highlight his strong record of making life more affordable for working families,” Huston said in a statement.
Huston also pointed to Republican-backed tax measures, including efforts to increase the State and Local Tax (SALT) deduction cap, eliminate taxes on Social Security benefits, overtime pay, and tips, and expand the Child Tax Credit.
Lawler emerged as a key player during negotiations surrounding Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” helping secure a deal that increased the SALT deduction cap from $10,000 to $40,000 — a significant issue for many taxpayers in high-tax states like New York.
The congressman’s political future, however, remains far from secure.
Lawler represents New York’s 17th Congressional District, a seat widely viewed as one of the most competitive in the country. The district has already become a prime Democratic target, with the nonpartisan Cook Political Report currently rating the race a toss-up.
Lawler also stands out as one of just three Republican House incumbents — alongside Nebraska Rep. Don Bacon and Pennsylvania Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick — who managed to win reelection in districts carried by former Vice President Kamala Harris in 2024.
Trump’s decision to appear in the district underscores the strategic importance of the seat for Republicans as they work to defend their majority and shore up support in politically divided territory.
