White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt on Monday forcefully condemned what she described as escalating “left-wing hatred” toward President Donald Trump, linking that rhetoric to Saturday night’s attempted assassination at the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner.

Leavitt, who was seated alongside President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump when gunfire erupted, described the president as “calm amid the chaos” and praised his leadership in the immediate aftermath. The White House Press Secretary, who is currently pregnant, was scheduled to be out for maternity leave.

“President Trump is fearless because he loves this country,” Leavitt said. “He is willing to put his own life on the line to deliver on the promises he made to the American people.”

Attack Disrupts Planned Evening

According to Leavitt, the administration had expected a routine evening focused on the First Amendment and press relations. Instead, the event was “hijacked by a crazed anti-Trump individual” who allegedly traveled across the country with the intent to assassinate the president and senior officials.

Law enforcement and Secret Service agents quickly intervened, stopping the suspect before any fatalities occurred. Leavitt highlighted the actions of one agent who was struck in the chest but survived due to a bulletproof vest.

President Trump later personally checked on the injured agent, she said.

Blame Placed on Political Rhetoric

Leavitt directly blamed what she called a “systemic demonization” of Trump by Democrats, media figures, and online commentators for creating an environment that fuels political violence.

“Those who constantly label the president as a fascist, as a threat to democracy, or compare him to Hitler are fueling this kind of violence,” she said.

She pointed to rhetoric from several prominent Democratic leaders and argued that such messaging mirrors language allegedly found in the suspect’s manifesto.

“If you’re being honest, there is no difference at all,” Leavitt said.

Calls for De-escalation—With Accountability

While emphasizing the need for peaceful political disagreement, Leavitt warned that the current climate has crossed a dangerous line.

“We can and should have fierce disagreement in this country,” she said. “But those disagreements must remain peaceful. Debating, protesting, and voting—not bullets—are how we settle them.”

She also criticized recent comments from media figures, calling a remark by late-night host Jimmy Kimmel about the First Lady “completely deranged.”

Security Review Underway

Leavitt confirmed that Chief of Staff Susie Wiles will convene a high-level review with the Department of Homeland Security and Secret Service to assess security protocols and prevent future threats.

Despite the incident, she said President Trump continues to have confidence in the Secret Service, noting that the security perimeter ultimately prevented a mass-casualty event.

“A Dark Moment”

“Nobody in recent years has faced more violence than President Trump,” Leavitt said. “This is the result of years of hateful rhetoric—and it has brought us to a dark moment in this country.”
