Puerto Rico‘s Shadow U.S. Senator Zoraida Buxo is set to endorse former President Donald Trump at his rally in Allentown, Pennsylvania, later today. Buxo, who holds a non-voting role advocating for Puerto Rico’s recognition and statehood, will lend her support to Trump at the rally, held in the diverse, predominantly minority city.

Buxo expressed her enthusiasm for campaigning in Pennsylvania earlier on Tuesday, referencing her previous campaign activities in Allentown for Pennsylvania’s Republican Senate candidate, Dave McCormick. In a recent tweet, she urged Pennsylvania residents to participate in the upcoming election, highlighting Republican priorities: “fighting to lower costs, secure the border and keep us safe.”

Additionally, Buxo reached out to Puerto Rican Americans across the U.S. in a social media message, voicing confidence in Trump’s commitment to the island territory. “Don’t have the slightest doubt [about] @realDonaldTrump,” she tweeted in Spanish. “He is the firm leader that PR needs to get us out of territorial limbo and do justice. In 2016 he expressed support for respecting the will of the electorate and providing a constitutionally valid process. TODAY IT IS REAFFIRMED.”

Reports indicate today’s event in Allentown will see substantial support from Puerto Rican attendees, according to NBC News’ Dasha Burns.

Background on Shadow U.S. Senator Role

The post of Shadow U.S. Senator, held by Buxo, is a position elected or appointed by a U.S. subnational polity, representing interests and advocating for recognition within Congress. Although Shadow Senators lack voting power in Congress, they are prominent voices for their territories, pressing for issues ranging from greater federal recognition to potential statehood.
