President Trump said he has invited the families of the two West Virginia National Guard members who were shot in Washington last week to the White House.
U.S. Army Spc. Sarah Beckstrom died last week after the shooting, which took place blocks from the White House on Wednesday. U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe, the second guard member who was shot, remains in serious condition.
“I said, ‘When you’re ready, because that’s a tough thing, come to the White House. We’re going to honor Sarah,” Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One on Sunday, adding that Beckstrom’s parents were “devastated.”
“And likewise with Andrew, recover or not,” Trump added.
West Virginia Gov. Patrick Morrissey told Fox News on Sunday that Wolfe was “fighting for his life right now.”
“And his family and all of his friends, they’re trying to harvest as many prayers as possible,” he added.
Authorities have named Rahmanullah Lakanwal, a 29-year-old Afghan national, as the suspected shooter. Lakanwal was wounded in the shooting on Wednesday and taken into custody.
