President Donald Trump delivered the commencement address Wednesday to the graduating Class of 2026 at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut, using the ceremony to praise military service, celebrate the academy’s newest officers and reinforce themes central to his administration.

Standing before the graduating cadets, Trump opened his remarks by congratulating the class and calling the academy “one of the most prestigious military academies anywhere in the world.”

“It’s a true honor to be here this magnificent day,” Trump said.

The president also recognized the families of graduates, thanking them for raising “American patriots,” while telling cadets they were stepping into an important national role.

“Very soon, you’ll swap your shoulder boards, and you’ll join the long blue line of legendary rescuers, seafarers, and service members that fill American hearts with admiration and pride,” Trump said.

He described the graduates as America’s “first defenders” and “first responders,” saying their responsibilities extend well beyond traditional military duties.

“You’re America’s first defenders, you are America’s first responders, you are the living standard bearers of America’s first fleet,” Trump told the graduating class.

Trump also linked the Coast Guard mission to his administration’s broader priorities, emphasizing national security, border operations and homeland defense while repeatedly invoking an “America First” message.

At one point during the speech, Trump highlighted cadet Thomas Rhoades, recognizing him for earning a perfect score on every fitness test during his four years at the academy. Calling him on stage, the president joked with the graduate after praising his performance.

“We’re not going to fight with him,” Trump said. “I’m not fighting him. This is not UFC.”

The ceremony concluded with the graduates entering the next stage of military service, while Air Force One later conducted a flyover after the president departed the area, according to the White House press pool.

Trump’s appearance at the Coast Guard Academy comes as administration officials are spreading out across the country for commencement season, particularly at military institutions.

Vice President JD Vance is set to deliver the commencement address at the U.S. Air Force Academy next week, continuing the administration’s presence at service academy graduations.

Meanwhile, Dan Caine is scheduled to address graduates at the U.S. Naval Academy.

The series of appearances has created a weeklong spotlight on the administration’s relationship with the military and the next generation of officers preparing to enter service.

For Trump, Wednesday’s address also marked another return to a military academy stage — venues he has often used to blend congratulations for graduates with broader messages about patriotism, service and the future direction of the country
