President Donald Trump celebrated a major Supreme Court victory Tuesday after the justices upheld state laws banning transgender athletes from competing in girls’ and women’s sports, calling the decision a “BIG WIN” for female athletes nationwide.
The ruling marks another significant legal victory for one of Trump’s signature cultural and education priorities, reinforcing policies his administration has championed since returning to office.
Trump: “BIG WIN”
Shortly after the decision was released, Trump praised the ruling in a post on Truth Social.
“BIG WIN: The United States Supreme Court just RULED AGAINST MEN PLAYING IN WOMEN’S SPORTS. Wow! That takes that ridiculous situation off the table!!!”
The president has repeatedly argued that allowing biological males to compete in women’s sports is unfair to female athletes, making the issue a central theme of his 2024 campaign and second-term agenda.
Supreme Court Upholds State Laws
In a landmark 6-3 decision, the Supreme Court ruled that Idaho and West Virginia may enforce laws limiting girls’ and women’s school sports to biological females.
Writing for the majority, Justice Brett Kavanaugh concluded that the Constitution does not require states to base athletic eligibility on gender identity rather than biological sex. The opinion also emphasized that transgender students should be treated with dignity and respect even as states retain the authority to establish sex-based athletic classifications.
The ruling overturns lower court decisions that had sided with two transgender athletes who challenged the state laws and is expected to affect similar statutes already in place across more than half the country.
Vindication for a Trump Priority
The decision aligns closely with Trump’s executive order, “Keeping Men Out of Women’s Sports,” signed early in his second term. The order directed federal agencies to interpret Title IX as protecting sports participation based on biological sex and threatened federal funding for schools that failed to comply.
Since taking office, the administration has also pursued Title IX investigations involving schools and athletic organizations that permitted transgender athletes to compete in women’s sports, arguing such policies deprive female athletes of fair competition.
