President Donald Trump will sit down with New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani at Gracie Mansion on Monday, bringing two starkly different political figures together for their third face-to-face meeting in less than a year.
The closed-door meeting is scheduled for 4:10 p.m. Eastern, according to the president’s public schedule. It will be Trump’s first meeting with Mamdani at the mayor’s official residence and their first encounter in New York City.
Mamdani’s office told Fox News that the two leaders will discuss issues affecting New York City and its residents. No detailed agenda has been released, and the meeting is listed as closed to the press.
The sit-down adds a major domestic political stop to Trump’s visit as world leaders arrive in Manhattan for the United Nations General Assembly. Trump is scheduled to address the annual gathering Tuesday, with wars in the Middle East and Ukraine expected to loom over the week’s diplomatic talks, according to The Wall Street Journal.
A Relationship Few Expected
Trump and Mamdani appeared headed for an immediate collision after the democratic socialist won City Hall in November 2025. Trump had sharply criticized Mamdani during the campaign, while Mamdani had made opposition to the president a central part of his political identity.
Their first Oval Office meeting that November, however, struck a more cooperative tone. The two discussed housing, affordability and other challenges facing New Yorkers, while signaling that they were willing to work together despite their considerable ideological differences.
Mamdani returned to the White House in February to seek federal support for a large affordable-housing proposal at Sunnyside Yard in Queens. Afterward, the mayor described the discussion as “productive” and said he was “looking forward to building more housing in New York City,” according to Right Side Broadcasting Network.
Monday’s meeting comes as disagreements between the two men have again moved into public view. The Journal reported that they have clashed over immigration policy and Mamdani’s proposed tax on high-value residences that are not an owner’s primary home. Mamdani also joined a legal challenge to a Trump administration rule tightening eligibility for visas and green cards based on immigrants’ use of certain public benefits.
Those fights leave the outcome of Monday’s discussion uncertain. Housing and affordability were central to the leaders’ previous talks, but neither City Hall nor the White House has publicly identified specific proposals that will be on the table at Gracie Mansion.
Trump’s Packed New York Schedule
The mayoral meeting is one piece of a busy afternoon for Trump. The president’s schedule calls for a 5:35 p.m. meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron, followed by a Republican National Committee reception at 6 p.m. and a MAGA Inc. dinner at 7:10 p.m. All four events are listed as closed to the press.
Trump’s United Nations visit will place him at the center of both international diplomacy and a high-profile test of federal-city cooperation. For Mamdani, the meeting is another chance to seek help from a president he has frequently opposed. For Trump, it is an opportunity to deal directly with the leader of his hometown as New York hosts one of the world’s largest annual diplomatic gatherings.
